Mohan Azaad, the acclaimed screenplay writer known for his National Award nomination for Madhur Bhandarkar’s “Chandni Bar,” has taken a significant leap in his career by stepping into the director’s chair. His directorial debut, the comedy film “What A Kismat,” hit theaters nationwide on March 1, 2024, marking a new chapter in his creative journey.
Reflecting on his transition from writing to directing, Azaad shares a nostalgic sentiment about his initial aspiration to make his directorial debut with “Chandni Bar 2,” the sequel to the highly successful film starring Tabu. Despite having written the script for the sequel and envisioning it as his directorial debut, unforeseen circumstances led him on a different path, ultimately shaping the destiny of his debut film, “What A Kismat.”
Azaad, recognized primarily for his writing prowess, had several ready-to-shoot scripts in his arsenal, including the sequel to “Chandni Bar.” However, he ultimately decided to embark on his directorial journey with a comedy film, showcasing his versatility and creative range. “What A Kismat” revolves around the character Chandu, a dreamer facing various challenges in life, including a discontented wife, an irate boss, and unrequited love. However, a twist of fate propels Chandu into a whirlwind of unexpected events, leading to an entertaining roller coaster ride.
One of the surprises of the film lies in the portrayal of veteran actor Tiku Talsania, known for his impeccable comic timing, in a grey character. Azaad expresses confidence in Talsania’s ability to captivate audiences with his performance, showcasing a different facet of his acting prowess.
