The murder of veteran actress Veena Kapur (74) following which her son, Sachin Kapur (43) — the prime accused — was arrested by the Mumbai police, has sent shockwaves through the industry. She was allegedly murdered by her son over a property dispute. Reportedly, the two had a heated argument following which Sachin bashed her head with a baseball bat repeatedly till she was dead. Later, with the help of their house help Chhotu aka Lalukumar Mandal, he dumped Veena’s body into a river away from Mumbai. The Juhu police initiated an investigation on December 6 after a missing complaint was filed by Veena’s elder son, who is settled in the US. Her body was found last week.
Actor Aditya Shukla, whose mother, actress Shielly Shukla, was a friend of Veena Kapur, says, “My mother and Veena Kapoorji acted together in Bhabhi (2002-2008). They became friends and Veenaji would often visit us. She shared details of her younger son’s ill-treatment towards her. Their relations were strained and she would talk about being harassed by him. He would torture her mentally, make a mess at home, play loud music, and would call guys over. Her ordeal began soon after she was granted a divorce from her husband around 2016. After her ex-husband’s death last year, he demanded a part in the property claiming it was under his dad’s name, in which he had absolutely no stake. Aunty had disowned him legally. She even approached the court that she didn’t want unknown men visiting the house, as she felt that it was a threat to her life. She also offered him a crore to vacate the house, but he wanted more money even though he was affluent himself.”
He further adds, “My mom and I helped in installing CCTV cameras and the software at her house because she wanted to capture her son’s conduct. She would show us the live footage. It was terrible.”
While he and his mother feared for the senior actress’ safety, they never imagined that the son could go to the extent of killing her. He says, “She had immense faith in our jury. Her life was at risk because of her son. Everything happened because of money. We were worried because he could harm her but we didn’t expect him to go that far. I want him to be given the harshest punishment. He made Veena aunty’s life a living hell.”
