Anupama Solanki says that while we are more aware of the LGBTQI community, we still have a long way to go. There are movies to help with this transition but most of them don’t really contribute much as are there for pure enjoyment.
“I don’t think in India people are aware of LGBTQ community. People still laugh when they see him and abuse them. Initially, I was not aware of LGBTQI because we have no awareness of them and that is very sad. People are enjoying Ek ladki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga, Shubh Mangal Zyada Savdhan, These types of movies create only enjoyment not awareness because they watch only for entertainment purpose. This is a very serious subject and nobody taught us how sensitive this subject is,” she says.
Of course, she adds that things are gradually changing. “Our Indian society is still conservative but the good thing is awareness has started in India. Gradually awareness and acceptance is surely better but I think we need more awareness so people don’t laugh and understand them. This is very sad because we use Hindi words to abuse them and call them names. This needs to change.
