The Versatile Actor Shares Her Transition from a Bookworm to a Showbiz Enthusiast and Calls for an Industry Free from Nepotism and Sexism
Sherlyn Chopra, a prominent figure in the entertainment industry for over a decade, takes a walk down memory lane as she shares her remarkable journey from being a studious girl to becoming a celebrated actor, model, and musician. “I was a very studious girl! Books were my best friends,” Sherlyn begins. She describes her early years as a dedicated student who excelled in academics and extracurricular activities. Sherlyn recalls that her journey into showbiz began with a beauty pageant, where she won the title of Miss Andhra, marking the start of her illustrious career.
Despite her initial ambitions of becoming a doctor like her late father, Sherlyn’s fascination with the glamour and allure of showbiz led her down a different path. “I was mesmerized by the world of science,” she admits. “But when I was 19, I found myself being drawn towards the glitz and glam of showbiz. I was always a nerd with reading glasses! So, to see myself all dolled up in a glamorous avatar was something I had never ever imagined or experienced in my life! It felt ecstatic and surreal,” she adds with a smile.

Sherlyn’s journey in the entertainment industry has been nothing short of remarkable. She reflects on her first film, “Red Swastik,” produced by Yash Raj, in which she portrayed a complex character, a serial killer. The film’s director, Vinod Pande, recognized her potential during the audition and believed she was the perfect fit for the role. “The rest is history,” Sherlyn proudly states.
Recalling the struggles she faced during her early days in the industry, Sherlyn acknowledges that the path to success was riddled with challenges. She faced humiliation and questioning of her worthiness, yet her determination remained unshaken. “It would be an understatement to say that I faced struggle,” she says. “I was often humiliated, and my worthiness was questioned time and again. Every time they broke my spirit, I would take days and weeks to heal and to strive again.”
When asked about the type of work she looks forward to and the changes she hopes to see in Bollywood, Sherlyn emphasizes her preference for substantial and quality roles over mediocrity. She advocates for a shift in the industry away from nepotism and sexism, creating a more inclusive space where talent is recognized and rewarded regardless of background or gender.
As for her dream role, Sherlyn aspires to play Julia Roberts’ iconic character in “Erin Brockovich,” finding the character emotionally compelling and inspiring.
