N.N. Sippy’s Ingenious Use of Monsoon in ‘Teesra Kaun’: Somy Ali’s Fond Memories
Monsoon season brings with it a sense of joy and romance, as people eagerly await the first raindrops and the chance to indulge in their favorite activities. For actor turned humanitarian Somy Ali, who now dedicates her time to running the NGO No More Tears, the rain holds a special place in her heart.
She finds solace in watching the raindrops hit her window, bringing a sense of tranquility that washes away all worries. In a recent conversation, Somy Ali shared her experiences and memories of the monsoon season, including an interesting anecdote from the shooting of the film ‘Teesra Kaun.’
Somy Ali fondly recalled her time shooting the film ‘Teesra Kaun,’ produced by the renowned filmmaker N.N. Sippy. The movie starred the talented actors Mithun Chakraborty, Javed Jaffrey, Chunkey Pandey, and herself in lead roles. During the filming of an outdoor song sequence, the unexpected rain disrupted their plans.
Instead of complaining about the inconvenience, the entire cast and crew decided to embrace the natural element and incorporate it into the song. The impromptu decision turned out to be a delightful and fun experience for everyone involved. It was a testament to the creativity and adaptability of N.N. Sippy and his team, who made the best use of the monsoon to enhance the visual appeal of the film.

While the monsoon season brings a refreshing change, it also poses challenges, especially when it comes to commuting. Somy Ali acknowledged the infamous traffic jams in bustling cities like Mumbai during the rainy season. She recounted how it would take her over two hours to travel from one place to another due to the heavy rain and resulting traffic congestion.
To make the most of the situation, she found solace in listening to the songs of the legendary actor Rajesh Khanna, whom she admires greatly. Sitting in the car, enveloped by the rain and the timeless melodies, Somy Ali embraced the moment and created her own personal haven.
Apart from the challenges faced during outdoor shoots and commuting, the monsoon season also demands special attention to one’s hair and skin. Somy Ali emphasized the importance of taking care of these aspects during this time. The increased humidity and moisture in the air can have adverse effects, and she stressed the need for adequate protection and care.
Growing up, Somy Ali cherished the tradition of enjoying chai (tea) and samosas while watching movies starring Rajesh Khanna, affectionately called “Kaka ji.” Her parents, concerned about their children falling ill or bringing muddy clothes and shoes into the house, prohibited them from playing in the rain. Nevertheless, she found comfort and joy in bonding with her family over movies and snacks, creating lasting memories that she cherishes to this day.
When asked about her favorite monsoon songs, Somy Ali enthusiastically mentioned two iconic tracks. The song “Rimjhim Gire Sawan,” featuring Amitabh Bachchan and Moushumi Chatterjee, held a special place in her heart.
